Dear Mr. Nishida:―

　You have taken a great deal of trouble on my account today; and I thank you very much, but please do not even think of coming to see me until the weather has become good. I am sorry your brother should have taken the trouble to come so far in this horrible weather. Many thanks for the 5 yen lent to me.
　I am not suffering at all today;―but every evening I get a fever, and coughing which lasts all night. So if I do not get better, I must avail myself of your kind offer to see me a physician. But you must not take the trouble to come with him;―I shall be able to talk some curious language to him, which he will be able to understand a little of, and the little servant can tell him enough.
　―I wish I could do something to make this day pass pleasantly to you; but there is no way of thanking you until I get well & see some sun again.

親愛なる西田様―

　今日はわたしのために大変な労を取って頂いただきました厚くお礼申し上げます。でも天気が良くなるまでは、わたしに会いに来ることなどは考えないでください。このようなひどい天気の中、弟さんが、遠いところをわざわざお越しくださって申し訳ありません。5円ご用立てして頂き誠にありがとうございました。
　今日は、わたしは全然具合が悪くはありません、―でも毎晩熱が出ますし、咳も出て一晩中続きます。だからもし良くならなければ、医者にわたしを診察させましょうとおっしゃるあなたの親切な申し出に甘えて、そうしなければなりません。しかしあなたはわざわざ医者と一緒に来たりしてはいけません、―医者にはわたしのおかしな言葉で話ができるでしょうし、それを医者も少しはわかるでしょう。それに若い女中の話で医者には十分間に合いますから。
　―今日という日があなたにとって楽しく過ぎるように何かできればいいのになあと思いますが、わたしが良くなって、またいくらか日の目を見るまでは、あなたにお礼を言うすべは何もありません。
