Dear Mr. Nishida:―

　Many thanks for kind words last night. I was able to teach as usual today; and will be quite well tomorrow: I was only sick at the stomach and bowels, and am nearly all right.
　I think I got sick simply from being angry. Today I got a person to take care of the house until tomorrow, when Mr. Orihara will send a servant. I have got bedding for her: she will always stay in the house. She is rather an elderly person, but I am told, a very good servant. At all events she does not belong to any hotel,―so I think I will be able to get along with her.
　Today I gave the third class their first dictation. I am giving them only poetry. We began with a beautiful little ballad translated from the Norwegian by Longfellow,―entitled “The Mother's Ghost.” They seemed to like it.
　I send you a paper. I trust the bad weather has not caused any return of your fever. Certainly “the back of the winter is broken.”
　―I think I shall be able to get along after a while. Getting rid of all the hotel associations I found to be absolutely necessary to my peace of mind. I do not think I have been able to sleep for nearly a month before three o'clock in the morning.so much was I annoyed.
　No foreign mails yet from the United States. The boys are always very good,―though I have some difficulty in making them all write during dictation in the lower classes. But we are becoming better friends every day. If I were not able to teach now, I should be very much depressed: teaching is becoming to me more of a pleasure and relaxation.

親愛なる西田様―

　昨夜ゆうべはご親切な言葉を頂き大変ありがとうございます。今日は普通どおりに教えることができました。そして明日はずいぶん良くなるでしょう。ただ胃腸が悪かっただけのことですし、今はほとんど大丈夫ですから。
　わたしはただ腹が立ったのでむかついたのだと思います。今日は、明日まで家事をしてくれる人にきてもらいました。明日には織原さんが女中さんをよこしてくださることになっています。その女中さんの夜具も買い求めました。その人は、ずっと我が家にいることになりますから。やや年配の方ですが、たいへん立派な女中さんだということです。いずれにしても、どの旅館ともまったく関係のない人です―だからわたしはその人とうまくやっていけると思います。
　今日3組に最初の書き取りをさせました。生徒たちには詩だけを教えています。われわれは、ロングフェローがノルウェー語から翻訳した見事な物語詩バラッドの小品から始めました―「母の亡霊」という題がついています。生徒たちはその詩が好きなようでした。
　新聞を一部お送りします。悪天候があなたの熱をぶり返していないことを祈っています。確かに「冬は峠を越しました」ね。
　―しばらくしたらうまくやっていけるだろうと思います。旅館との関係を断ちきることが、わたしの心を安らかに保つのに必要だということがわかりました。ひと月近く、わたしは午前3時より前には眠ることができなかったと思います―それほどいらいらしていたのです。
　外国郵便は、アメリカからはまだ一通もきていません。生徒たちはいつも大変立派です。もっとも、下級のクラスは、書き取りの間中全員に書かせるにはいくらか難しさはありますが。でもわたしたちは日ごとにより親しい友だちになりつつあるところです。もしもわたしが現在教えることができないとすれば、たいへん憂鬱ゆううつになっているでしょうが。教えることは、わたしにはよりよい楽しみや、気晴らしになりつつあります。
