Dear Nishida:―

　I was very happy to get your letter. Settsu is so much better that we shall certainly get close to Matsue,―weather permitting. I have had my passport made out for Oki, Sakai, & Mionoseki.Oki, to please Professor Chamberlain. (for the Guide-book, and also to please myself.) When I received your last letter, I never dreamed of the possibility of your coming to Kyushu , because of what you told me about the Doctor's admonition,―and I planned to see you at Mionoseki. But, if you wish to make a short trip to Kyushu in the meanwhile, I hope you will try to see Mr. Kano, who is now in Kumamoto, and for whom I enclose a letter. I can't possibly at present tell you with any degree of positiveness when I will be back in Kumamoto,―because I laid out so much literary work to do, and the chance of doing it will depend on the weather, which is very treacherous. All I am sure of is that I must get back to Kumamoto by way of Nagasaki by the 10th September. I will write you next from Mionoseki.
　What you say about Kyoto is too true. The city makes me despair. I want to spend five years in it,―studying Buddhism. It is a beautiful and wonderful place.just as beautiful and wonderful, as Kumamoto is ugly and commonplace. I meet some Shimane Ken students living here―Kawasumi and Notsu, and a teacher of the Matsue Normal School,―Oide, I think.
　I want to go to Nara, if possible, tomorrow or next day, before leaving for Kobe; but I may stay a day or two longer. Wishing you the best health and happiness in the world believe me,
