Mionoseki, Sept. 2d, '93 (sic.)
Dear Nishida:―

　Many thanks for the papers you so kindly sent us. We shall take passage on the Mikawa Maru for Bakkan,―the same vessel by which you went there.
　The weather continues beautiful; and we have had a few delightful glimpses of Daisen. ―Also we much enjoyed the eggs. Settsu tells me to thank you again many times for her.
　―We went to the Miojinja today, and saw the miko dance, and were very kindly treated by the priests. The dance was different from that of Kitzuki, and from that of Nara;―but of the two, the Kitzki kagura most resembles it. However the dancers are not attractive: one was a woman advanced in years, and the other was not like the beautiful Kitzuki miko I saw two years ago. The dance is, however, very primitive, and therefore interested me much.
　―What a pity you could not be with us a little more! The moon is getting prettier all the time; and from the suzumi-dai we see the flickering of the “Golden Dragon”, and the Dragon is getting longer and bigger every night. Also, the weather is cooler.

親愛なる西田―

　誠に親切に送っていただいた新聞、大変ありがとうございました。われわれは、馬関ばかん[下関]行きの三河丸みかわまるに乗ります―あなたがそこへ乗って行かれたのと同じ船です。
　素晴らしい天気が続きます。そしてわれわれは、ちょっと大山だいせんを楽しく眺めました。―またわれわれは、卵の話を大いに楽しみました。セツが、今度も、自分に代わってあなたによくよくお礼を言うように申しています。
　―われわれは、今日美保神社へ行って、ミコ[巫女]の舞を見ましたが、神官に大変親切なもてなしを受けました。舞は、杵築の舞や、奈良の舞とは違っていました。―しかしその二つのうちでは、杵築のカグラ[神楽]の方がそれに似ていました。しかし舞手まいては魅力的ではありません。すなわち、一人は歳のいった女性で、もう一人は、わたしが2年前に見た美しい杵築のミコとは違っていました。舞は、しかし、大変古風でしたから、大変興味をひかれました。
　―あなたがもうしばらくわれわれと一緒にいらっしゃることができなくて、何と残念なことだったでしょう！月が刻々と大きくなりつつあります。そしてスズミ-ダイ[涼み台]からわれわれは、「金龍丸」の明かりがチラチラするのを見ています。その龍は、毎晩だんだん長く、また大きくなっていきます。天気もまた、一段と涼しくなっていきます。
　あなたとご家族に対して、セツとわたし自身のこの上なくやさしい心をもって、
