【英語原文】

Dear Nishida:―

　Settsu bids me write you again to tell you how sorry we all were that we did not discover there was a hole in the mosquito curtain until after you had gone away―so that you must have been much troubled by the mosquitoes. But we all promise that if you make us happy by coming here again, there will be no hole in the mosquito-curtain.
　―I forgot to tell you, when writing the other day, that the two new teachers for our school whom you referred to, had been engaged during the last term by Mr. Kano, and delayed coming till their engagements were finished. The day before yesterday I heard that Mr. Ichino, our teacher of chemistry and English, had been discharged. Why, I can't find out. He seemed to be a nice man, and had been four years in the school. My own contract has been fixed for a year―though I have no copy of it, and did not ask for one. But I think at the end of this year, I'll try to get somewhere else. Seems to me it is dangerous to stay too long here,―after the case of Mr. Ichino. My hours have become very easy.
　―You made a mistake in writing me that you saw Mr. Sakuma (he was at Aso-San); but you saw Mr. Sakurai and Mr. Akizuki,―both of whom seem to have pleasant memories of you, especially the charming old man.
　―I saw something here the other day I thought Katai―(is that the word?) The Director made an address to the boys under the shed, and the sun entering came upon the heads of the last rank. Three boys staggered and fell, and were led away―overpowered by the heat. One word would have relieved all the rest. But the Director talked on for ten minutes before he appeared to notice the suffering. Then the order was given.ten steps forward, into the shade. During play hours, Mr. Kano is very kind to the boys, plays with them, &c. But in discipline time he is another man. This is an illustration.
　―I am sending you a famous little book about English words, because I am sure it will be of use to you. But let me say a word first. Dean Trench wrote before the time of the new philosophy, and before the evolutional history of our language was known. He believed in the old Bible-myths,―the story of Babel, and the absurd theory that language was “given by God.” Consequently the first chapter of his book is.bosh! Nevertheless, it is very valuable as an attempt to popularize the study of values in words, and you will, I am sure, enjoy reading the rest of it.

　セツがもう一度あなたに手紙を差し上げて、あなたがお帰りになって初めて、われわれ皆が、蚊帳かやに穴があいていたことがわかったことに、どんなに申し訳なく思っているかお伝えするようにと申しております―したがって、あなたは蚊にたいそう悩まされたに違いありません。しかし、もしもう一度こちらにお出でになって、わたしたちに楽しい思いをさせてくださるならば、われわれは皆が蚊帳に穴がないこと・・・・を約束いたします。
　―先日手紙を書いたときにお伝えするのを忘れていましたが、あなたが話に出されていたわれわれの学校の二人の新任教師は、先学期、嘉納氏により採用されていました。ところが、彼らの［向うでの］契約期間が終わるまで、赴任が遅れていました。化学と英語の教師市野氏が解雇されていたと、一昨日おとつい聞きました。その理由は、わたしには分かりません。あの人は立派な人のように思いました。この学校にそれまで4年勤めていましたのに。わたし自身の契約は一年に決まりました―わたしは、契約書の写しを受け取っていませんが、その請求はしませんでした。しかし今年度の終わりには、どこかよそで職を得るよう努力するつもりです。どうやらここで長く居過ぎると危険なように思えます―市野氏のことがあってからは。わたしの持ち時間は、非常に楽になりました。
　―あなたが佐久間[信恭]氏に会ったとわたしに書いてくださったのは間違いでした（彼は阿蘇山にいました）。あなたは桜井氏と秋月氏に会われたのです。─この両人共あなたの楽しい仲間のようですね、特に魅力的な老齢の方は。
　―先日わたしはここでかたい・・・（それが正しい言葉でしょうか）と思ったことを見ました。[嘉納]校長が、小屋のようなところで、生徒たちに訓話をしていました。すると、日が差し込んで、最後列の生徒たちの頭に当たりました。やがて三人の生徒がよろめいて倒れて、運び去られました―暑さに負けたのでした。一言指示があれば、他の全員も救われたことでしょうに。ところが校長は、10分間も話し続けてやっと生徒たちの苦痛に気づいたように見えました。それから命令が出されました―10歩前へ、陰の中へ、と。遊び時間には、嘉納氏は生徒たちに大変やさしく、彼らと一緒に遊んだりします。ところが、修身の時間になると、別人になります。これが実例です。
　―英単語について、ちょっとした有名な本をあなたに送ります、あなたの役に立つだろうと思うからです。しかし最初に一言言わせてください。トレンチ司祭は、新しい哲学の時代以前、したがって、われわれの言語発達の歴史が知られるより前に、この本を書いたということです。この司祭は、昔からの聖書神話―バベルの塔の話だとか、ことばは「神によって与えられた」という不合理な理論が正しいと信じているのです。その結果、彼の本の第一章は―たわごとに過ぎません！ それにもかかわらず、単語の意義の研究を普及させようとする試みとして、大変価値があるのです。したがって、あなたはきっとその後の部分全部を読むのを楽しまれるでしょう。
