Dear Nishida:―

　I had just finished my letter to you, when your second came, enclosing receipt for expressage which you so kindly advanced to save me expense. Many thanks. I return amount now, and am just about to write to Mr. Chamberlain for the information. I looked through his book on Japanese Geographical Nomenclature of Ainu derivation, but I could not find the names in it. He will answer me probably by return-mail.
　I trust the statuette will come all right. I hope the Inada-Hime will be admired at Chicago; but I fear that the whole interest of the work will not be understood without explanation of an elaborate kind. However the work has a charm in itself,―judging by the photograph,―which ought to ensure its sale. There will be some Japanologists at the exposition of course,―from England, France, Italy, and Germany,―as well as a few Amrican sinologists.
　―I have your translation of the verse on the tablet. Your explantation of the tablet itself, and the copying of the text, is of rarest interest.

　あなた宛のお手紙を丁度書き終わった時にあなたからの2 通目が届き、私が費用を節約するようにご親切にも立て替えて払っていただいた速達料金の領収書が入っていました。幾重にも感謝申し上げます。その金額を今お返しいたします。そして丁度チェンバレン氏に教示依頼の手紙を書こうとしているところです。私はアイヌ語から派生した日本の地名を、彼の本で調べてみましたが、そこにはその地名は見つけることができませんでした。彼は多分返事で、私に答えてくださるでしょう。
　彫像は安全に届くと思います。稲田姫はシカゴで称賛されるとよいと思いますが、この作品の興味は全て、詳しい説明がないと理解されないだろうと危惧しています。しかし作品は―写真から判断すれば―それ自体に当然それが売れることを保証するだけの魅力があります。もちろん博覧会には日本研究家も数人控えているでしょう―イギリス、フランス、イタリア、ドイツなどからやって来た人たちが―アメリカの中国学者も2、3人はもちろんのことですが。
