Dear Nishida:―

　I do not think I shall be able to travel much this summer; but I think I certainly shall be for a while in Nagasaki (?) How would you like to meet me.(as my guest, of course.)―and spend a few days with me at Nagasaki? You might also be able to visit Kumamoto with me, and afterwards return to Hondo by way of Moji. I merely suggest all this; I shall not know positively what I can do until I receive instructions from America in reply to my letters of last month.
　―There is a new teacher here named Shioda. He was a judge at Niigata. I have not yet spoken to him, and perhaps never will; for I do not yet know the names of my fellow-teachers (only three or four). He is said to be an athlete, and to have won many honours in different kinds of contests, and is very fine-looking. It seems judges are not paid much; for he gets 400 yen more salary as a teacher. The other new teacher was a “graduate” of cotton-spinning!―whatever that means. At all events that was the business he had studied.
　―Mr. Akizuki's seventieth birthday was celebrated by all the teachers and students and many public officials. I sent something to the feast. Pretty sake-cups were distributed to the guests,―containing an inscription in gold characters of a Chinese poem composed by Mr. Akizuki.
　―There is no other news of particular interest. The weather is heavy and warm; Kumamoto extremely uninteresting; school-life infernally dull,―notwithstanding the visits of Prince Shirakawa and of Viscount Sano. You are very happy not to live in so detestable a place as Kumamoto,―I think. But perhaps you would not hate it as much as I do.

　今年の夏は、あまり旅行ができないと思います。でも、しばらくの間、きっと長崎（？）に滞在できると思ってはいる・・・・・・のですが。あなたはどのような形で、わたしに会い―（もちろんわたしの招待客としてですが）― そしてご一緒して長崎で2、3日過ごしたいですか。熊本にも一緒に行けるかもしれません、そしてその後で、門司経由で本土に帰られてもよろしいのかもしれません。わたしは、ただこうしたらと言っているだけです。わたしは、先月出したわたしの手紙に対するアメリカからの返信でいろいろと指示を受けるまでは、何ができるかはっきりとは分かりません。
　―こちらには、塩田しおだという新任の教師がいます。新潟の裁判官でした。まだこの人とは話をしていませんが、多分将来も全然しないでしょう。というのは、わたしは、同僚教師たちの名前を、まだ知らないからです（ほんの3、4人しか知りません）。塩田氏は、スポーツマンで、いろいろな競技大会で多くの賞を獲得したと言われていて、大変美男子です。裁判官は、給料はあまり多くはもらっていないようです。というのは、教師としての方が、400円もの高い給料をもらっているからです。もう一人の新任教師は、綿糸紡績業の「卒業生」でした―それがどんな意味にせよ。とにかくそれが、この人が勉強した分野でした。
　―秋月氏の70回目の誕生日が、教師全員と学生全員および多くの役人によって祝われました。わたしは、その祝宴に少し送りました。招待客には見事な盃が配られました。―秋月氏が作った漢詩の金文字の銘入りでした。
　―この他には面白いニュースはありません。天気は、鬱陶うっとうしくて暖かいです。熊本は、非常に殺風景です。学校生活は、白川親王と佐野子爵が御来訪になったのにもかかわらず、地獄のように退屈です。あなたは、熊本ほどひどく嫌な所に住んでいないのは幸せだ─と思います。あなただったら、熊本をわたしほど嫌いにはならないでしょうが。
