【英語原文】

Dear Nishida:―

　I fear this may not find you well, because of the terrible weather and the terrible trouble in Matsue. I do not wish you therefore to have any trouble; but at the same time, I wish to express my sorrow and my love for Matsue by sending such little help as I can afford. In order to avoid giving you trouble I have sent fifty yen to the San-In-Shimbun office for the relief-fund:―I do not know any one else to whom to send it except yourself, but I fear you have trouble of your own. Were I not just for the moment straitened by other expenses, I would try to send more; but this is the best I can do just now―as my money is nearly all in Government bonds.
　I trust you are soon going to be well enough to let us hear from you. My knowledge of what happened came through Adzukizawa. The boy wrote me a beautiful letter. He told me you were safe, but not well.

親愛なる西田―

　この手紙が届くときは、あなたの体調が良くないのではないかと心配しています。松江はひどい天気で、大災害があったのですから。わたしは、あなたが災害に会われていないことを願っています。ところで、やはり、わたしはできる限りの、寸志すんしをお送りして松江に対するわたしの悲しみと愛情を表したいと思います。あなたには・・・・・ご面倒をかけないように、山陰新聞社に義援金50円を送りました。わたしは、あなた以外にそれを送る人を知りませんが、あなたには自身の苦労があるのではないかと懸念しています。もしも今、他の出費で困っていなければ、もっと多く送るでしょうが、今のところは、これが自分にできる限り、ぎりぎりのところです。―わたしのお金は、ほとんどすべてが国債になっていますから。
　間もなくあなたは体調が良くなられて、お便りが頂けるようになると信じています。そちらの出来事を知ったのは、小豆沢[八三郎]を通してでした。あの生徒がみごとな手紙をくれました。あなたは無事でしたが、体調はよろしくないと書いていました。
