The Business Side
Dear Nishida:―

　(My eyes have been bad again.this is just a line about Mr. Arakawa Junosuke's complaint)
　He agreed to come to Kobe on the following conditions:―
　―1 dollar a day for work done.
　―8 dollars for travelling expenses to and from Matsue.
　I advanced him 20 yen on his arrival; the curio-merchant gave him 10 more on the day he left―in all he received 30 yen.
He acknowledges that he received 2 yen more than by agreement he was entitled to. ―Bear also in mind that he finished doing only a small part of the work for which he was engaged. There remain more than 100 statues to write about. Mr. De Ath begged him to stay at the same terms until after April. He would not.
　―Now, about his complaint.
　He was offered the use of my house, but declined it, and went to a hotel. Then he insisted upon going to Osaka every night and returning every morning. I told him not to,―Mr. De Ath did the same. He insisted on going. We could not prevent him. But his going to Osaka was his own private affair―not mine.
　He broke,―either through weakness or carelessness,―a statue in Mr. De Ath's house. Then he went to Osaka and brought back a man to mend it, and paid for the mending. Mr. De Ath did not scold him about the matter. But he seems to want Mr. De Ath to pay him for breaking statue―or at least for the results of his own act.
　All of Mr. Arakawa's expenses were involved by his own obstinacy or carelessness. It was not necessary for him to go to a hotel, or to go every night to Osaka, or to break a valuable statue. No one asked him to do these things. Why should he ask to be paid for them? The curio-merchant did more than he bargained to do―and Mr. Arakawa got his thirty dollars. What he did with the money is not our concern.
　Mr. De Ath is not generous. He is a sharp business man. He appreciates and wants the services of Mr. Junosuke. But hereafter Mr. Junosuke must make his own arrangements. I have nothing to do with Mr. De Ath henceforward. Mr. Junosuke has a chance to make money―but not by asking to be paid for breaking statues.

　The Moral Side.(does not exist in business).
　Mr. De Ath ought to have seen that the old expert was doing more than the bargain required, and putting himself to expense. Therefore he ought, as a gentleman (which he is not) to have given Mr. Junosuke more than he promissed to. Also, on thc first of the year, he ought to have made Mr. Junosuke a handsome present. Also he should have perceived the value of the work done,―if he were not an ignorant hog (as he is). Since he is very anxious to get more of the expert's services,―the expert will be fully justified, considering the shabby treatment received,―in taking full advantage of Mr. De Ath's anxiety.

親愛なる西田―

　（わたしの目がまた悪くなりました―これは荒川重之輔氏の不満について、ほんの一筆差し上げるものです。）
　荒川氏は以下の条件で神戸に来ることに同意しました。
　―仕上げた仕事に対して1日1ドル
　―松江からの往復旅費八ドル
　わたしは荒川氏がこちらに到着したときに、20円前払いしました、骨董屋、デ・アス氏がその出発の際に、もう10円与えました―全部で30円受け取ったことになります。
　荒川氏は契約によって受け取る権利があるより2円多く受け取ったことを認めています―また、自分が雇われた目的の仕事を少ししか終えていないということも留意して置いてください。また、解説を書くべき彫像が、まだ100個以上残っています。デ・アス氏は彼に同じ条件で4月以降までいてもらいたいと、懇願しました。ところが、それをうけ入れようとはしません。
　―さて、荒川氏の不満についてです。
　荒川氏はわたしの家を使いなさいという申し出を断って、ホテルに行きました。それから毎晩大阪に行って、毎朝戻って来ると言い張りました。わたしは、そんなことはしないようにと言い、ました―デ・アス氏も同じことを伝えました。それでも、大阪に行くと言い張りました。われわれは止めることはできませんでした。しかし、大阪へ行くのは、自分自身の私的なことで―わたしが関わることではありませんでした。
　荒川氏は―欠陥があったためか、不注意のためか―デ・アス氏の家の彫像を壊しました。それから大阪に行って、それを修復する男を連れて戻って来て、修復費を払いました。デ・アス氏はそのことで叱責しっせきしませんでした。ところが、彫像を壊したことに対して・・・・・・・・・・・・―少なくとも自分自身が仕出かしたことに対して、デ・アス氏に弁償して欲しいと思っているようです。
　荒川氏の出費は、すべてその頑固さ、あるいは不注意がもたらしたものでした。ホテルに行く必要はなく、あるいは毎晩大阪に行く必要もなく、また貴重な彫像を壊す必要もなかったのです。誰もこのようなことをしてくれと頼んだ者はいませんでした。荒川氏にはそれらの弁償を求めるべき理由はないでしょう。骨董屋は契約以上のことをしました―それで、荒川氏は30ドル受け取っていたのです。氏が、そのお金をどう使ったかは、われわれの知ったことではありません。
　ところで、デ・アス氏は、金離れのよい人ではありません。抜け目のない実業家なのです。重之輔氏の仕事を高く評価し、またそれを望んでいました。しかし今後は、重之輔氏は自分でいろいろと手筈を整えなければなりません。わたしは、これから先は、デ・アス氏とは何の係わりもまったくなくなりました。重之輔氏は、金を儲ける機会はあります―しかし、それは彫像を壊したことに対して弁償してもらうよう求めるようなことによってではありません。

道徳的な面・・・・・―（商売には存在しないものです)
　デ・アス氏は、この年取った達人が、取引条件以上のことをしていることを見抜いていて、自分で費用を払うつもりでいました。従って、デ・アス氏は紳士として（実は、紳士ではなかったのですが）、重之輔氏に約束した以上のものを与えるべきでした。更に、元日には重之輔氏に当然結構な贈り物をすべきだったのです。またデ・アス氏は仕上げられた仕事の価値は認めるべきだったのです―もしも無知で、貪欲な男ホッグでなければの話ですが（実はそういう男なのです）。デ・アス氏はこの達人にもっと仕事をしてもらいたいと大変強く願っていましたので―この達人の言動は自分が受けたひどい扱いを考慮すれば、デ・アス氏の強い願望に大いに付け込んでも―十分正当化されるでしょう。
