Dear Mr.Arakawa:-

　I am sorry you were not more generously treated by the curio-merchant, De Ath; but this was no fault of mine,―nor can I very well ask Mr. Ath to pay you more than your own terms.
　I can only advise you to write in Japanese to Mr. De Ath, saying that the work you did in Kobe involved expenses larger than you had foreseen,―that the remuneration you received, although just according to law, was not sufficient to encourage you to stay in Kobe,―and that, by Japanese courtesy, to send you home at the opening of the New Year without other marks of consideration, seems to you a small act on the part of a millionaire. Perhaps Mr. De Ath will then send you something more.
　My best wishes to you always. If De Ath does not do right by you, I shall find some one else who will,―in Tokyo or elsewhere. I have myself refused to have anything more to do with De Ath.
