Oct. 29th '96
Dear Nishida:―

　Although I have no time to write you today a good long letter, I answer yours at once, supposing that you might need that explanation quickly.
　“To wipe out a score” has become a synonym for retaliation, vengeance, paying back a wrong.
　The colloquialism (for, although used by so elegant a writer as Froude, it is a colloqulalism) seems to have arisen in this way:―
　There are or were many kinds of games in which the points are, or were, reckoned by 20,―that is, of course, by the score. As soon as made, the points are marked down. Suppose one player has made, or, as we say “scored” a certain number;―40, for example,―so soon as his rival makes 60, the points he first made are practically wiped out, nullified. There remains, only the difference 20 to the advantage of his rival. Otherwise the two are equal: the first “score”is “wiped out”.
　―Now this figure of wiping out a score, exactly fits with the idea of retaliation or revenge. A man does a wrong;―the one whom he has wronged says, “I have a score to settle with you.” So soon as the wronged person revenges himself,―“gets even” with the other by doing him an equal amount of hurt,―he says: “Well, I've wiped out that score with you.”
　―In the case of Sulla and Marius, the “bloody scores” to be wiped out on either side were, of course, the terrible slaughters, made by the aristocratic, & by the democratic parties in turn, as they succeeded to power. Slaughter for slaughter,―vengeance for vengeance. “A bloody score”=a bloody debt, or “reckoning,” of revenge to be paid, settled, or “wiped out.”
　―I shall be very glad to pay Mr. Junosuke fifty yen ($50) for the work suggested,―providing only that the miko be very pretty,―like the daughter of the Dragon-God in Yoshimune's illustrations to Urashima. Please ask him, if you see him, not to make her fat: I want the fine thin face such as is drawn in Urashima, and, if possible, the long hair,―simple and flowing down, ancient fashion. But of course, he knows the style. I imagine that of Kitzuki were best―& to me, dearest. ―Only let her be pretty enough to please not only me, but likewise the Gods.

　今日は、十分長い手紙を書く時間がありませんが、あなたがあの説明を急いで必要とされていると推察しますので、あなたのお便りにすぐ返事を書きます。
　 　“To wipe out a score”は、報復、復讐、不当な行為に仕返しをすることを意味する慣用句になっています。
　この口語的表現は、（というのは、フルード[ジェームス・アンソニー(1818-94)イギリスの歴史家、随筆家]ほどの気品のある作者が使ってはいますが、それは確かに口語的表現です）次のようにして起こってきたと思われます。
　得点が20点単位で数えられるゲームがたくさん、現在もあるし、過去にもありました。得点が得られるとすぐ、それは記入されます。例えば、一人のプレーヤーが、ある数、―例えば40点―を取った、つまり、一般の言い方では、「得点した（scored ）」と仮定しましょう。すぐ後で、彼の競争相手が60点を取ると、そのプレーヤーが最初に出した点は、事実上帳消しになり、ゼロになります。差の20点だけが、相手の得点として残ります。ほかの点では、二人は互角です。最初の「得点」（score）は｢帳消しされて｣（wiped out）います。

　―スラとマリウスの場合は、両方の側で帳消しにすべき「血なまぐさいスコア・・・」は、もちろん、最初は、貴族政党[閥族派]によって、次は、権力を引き継いだ民衆党[平民派]によって行われた恐るべき殺戮でした。殺戮には殺戮を―復讐には復讐をというものでした。｢血なまぐさいスコア｣＝報復すべき、解決すべき、すなわち、「帳消しにすべき」血なまぐさい負債、つまり、｢清算すべきもの｣ということです。
　―わたしは、重之輔氏が提案している作品に対して、喜んで50円（50ドル）払いましょう―ただし、ミコ[巫 女]が、非常に美しいものに限ります―芳宗よしむね[新井]の浦島の挿絵にある乙姫のように。もし重之輔氏にお会いになれば、ミコを太った姿にしないように頼んでください。わたしは、浦島に描かれているような、美しい、痩せ形の顔が欲しいです。そして、もし可能なら、長髪・・―さっぱりとして、垂れ下がった古代風―がほしいです。でも、もちろん、重之輔氏ならその風采は知っています。わたしは、杵築のミコが最高だろうと思います。そして、わたし・・・にとっては、一番かわいいのです。―どうかミコを、わたし・・・ばかりではなく、神様も喜ばすほど美しくしてもらいたいものです。
