Dear Nishida: —

Thanks for kind letter, and for the legend of the curious stone.
Mr. Kano has come back; but I had no chance for a good talk with him—being only once summoned to sign my second contract, in a hurry. I hear that one reason of Mr. Kano's visit to Tōkyō was that his young wife (she is only 18) graduated, and he wished to be present. She will not come to Kumamoto before next winter. Since you wish me to delay speaking about other matters, I will wait a month or two,—unless you tell me otherwise.
—The two new teachers for our school are both graduates of the Nobles' School at Tōkyō. Only one has arrived. He teaches English and political economy. He was 17 years in the Nobles' School. He is quite tall, and so far as I can judge, very gentle and courteous. I liked him as soon as I saw him. He has the desk next to me. The other teacher who is to come, is said to be a good German scholar.
—The Kumamoto school-rules have been made stricter since the vacation. Every teacher (except myself) is now to be held responsible for the conduct of the students of a certain number of classes. More than 100 new students have come,—including pupils from other higher middle schools. Four came from Kanazawa. When I asked why, I was answered :ー “To obtain the benefit of the Kyūshū influence” ー whatever that may be.
—My hours have been reduced to 20; so I shall give some extra hours to composition for the highest classes. The younger classes I have not to teach any more.
—I am delighted to hear you will have an easy time this term. And no doubt the weather will remain mild for another three months. In Kumamoto it is very warm. Settsu has quite changed since she came back: she is now always laughing and happy, and even talks about traveling next summer. Just as you said.
—I am sorry to say that my publishers have written me that they will not put my book on the market before early in the spring, and that they wish to include the results of my Oki trip. I regret the delay; but it will make the book more interesting, and I shall now include also a little sketch of what you wrote to me about the Naomasa festival at Matsue. I suppose the book will reach Japan by the latter part of March.
—So Nakai is at the Naval Academy. All the more reason why I wish to go there. Really I shall try hard to get into the Naval Academy if there ever be an opening. They are glorious boys—the best Japan can make for her most important defensive service.
—The opening of the School here was dull-almost dismal. Teaching began on the13th only. The boys were silent as death. I thought it was regret for home; but it was the announcement of new and severer rules.

　嘉納氏は戻ってこられましたが、ゆっくりお話をする機会はありませんでした。ただ一度だけ、二年目の契約の署名をするために呼び出されただけで、それも、急いでしただけですから。嘉納氏の東京行きの理由は、同氏の若い奥様（わずか十八歳です）が、卒業され、式に参加されることだったということです。奥様は、来年の冬までは、熊本には来られないでしょう。あなたが、他の件について話すのを延ばしてもらいたいと思っていらっしゃるので、あなたが別の指示をなさらなければ一、二ヶ月は待つつもりです。
－われわれの学校の二人の新任教師は、どちらも東京の学習院の卒業生です。今のところ一人だけ着任しています。英語と経済を教えます。学習院に十七年いた人です。ずいぶん背が高く、私が判断する限りでは、大変穏やかで礼儀正しい人柄です。わたしは顔を合わせるとすぐ好きになりました。その机はわたしの隣にあります。もう一人来る予定の人は、ドイツ人の立派な学者だということです。
－熊本の校則が、休暇以来より厳しくなりました。教師は誰も（わたしを除いて）今は一定の数のクラスの学生の行動に責任を持つことになっています。他の高校からの転入生も含めて一〇〇人以上の学生が入ってきました。四人が金沢から来ました。わたしがその理由を尋ねると、－それがどんな意味かはっきりしませんが、「九州の感化の恩恵を得たいから」とかいう答えが返ってきました。
　－わたしの受け持ち時間は、二十時間に減りました。それで余分の数時間を最上級クラスの作文に当てる予定です。下級のクラスはもう教える必要はありません。
　－あなたの今学期は、前より時間が楽だと聞いて嬉しく思っています。それに天気もきっともう三ヶ月間は穏やかでしょう。熊本は大変暖かです。セツは、こちらに戻ってからすっかり変わりました。今は、いつも笑っていて幸せです。しかももう来年の夏の旅行のことを話すほどです。まったくあなたがおっしゃる通りです。
　－残念ながら、わたしの本の出版社が、わたしの本を来年の春先までは出版しないとの手紙をよこしました。でも、わたしの隠岐旅行の成果をそれに入れたいと言っています。出版が遅れるのは残念です。でもその方が、本はもっと面白くなるでしょう。それに今では、わたしはあなたが書いてくださった松江の直政なおまさ祭の短い小品スケッチを入れるつもりです。この本は、三月の後半までには日本に到着すると推察しています。
　－ところで、中井は、海軍兵学校に入っているのですね。それはますますそこへ行きたい理由になります。本当に、万一空席があれば、海軍兵学校へ行こうと一生懸命努力するつもりです。生徒は素晴らしいし、日本が自国の最も重要な防衛の役目を果たすために養成できる最上の人たちですから。
　－こちらの学校の学年初めの式は退屈で、－憂鬱と言ってもいいくらいでした。授業はやっと十三日に始まったばかりです。生徒たちはまったく死んだように無口です。それは彼らが故郷を離れた後悔の念に駆られているためだとわたしは思っていたのですが、実は、新しい、より厳しい校則が発表されたせいでした。
