Dear Nishida:-

I am writing in haste to beg of you not to give yourself any trouble to get anything for me until you feel perfectly well and have plenty of leisure. It would pain me very much even to put you to the trouble of writing a letter while you are not feeling strong. So please do not do anything of that kind.—Many thanks for your pretty story Nawomasa.
The change in the weather has been very sudden—even here. Settsu got a cold, and I a little cough; but we are both well again. You know the first turn of the weather is the trying one: when it sets in clear and cool we don't feel it so much.
I have had a good chance twice since to speak to Mr. Kano; but as you told me to wait, I did not speak about the matter. Whenever you allow me to, it will be all right. Mr. Kano is now over his rush of business, and has plenty of time.
Today is the festival Fujisaki Jinja (Hachi-man) which lasts 5 days. There are horse-races of a curious kind,—the horses running without riders. The school is to have an excursion on the 15th -to Kagoshima. It will take about ten days. I shall not go, as I am busy writing about Oki.
Take good care of yourself, and pray do not write till you feel well. I think the winter is going to be a mild one—at least in Japan.

親愛なる西田－

　あなたがすっかり元気になられて、十分暇ができるまでは、わたしのためにいかなる労も取って頂かないようにお願いしようと、急ぎ一筆認したためているところです。あなたが、まだよくなっていらっしゃらない気がしている間は、あなたにお手紙を書いて頂くようなご迷惑をおかけすることさえ、心を痛めることになるでしょう。だからどうかそのようなことは何事もなさらないようお願いいたします。－直政なおまさについての素晴らしい話を大変ありがとうございました。
　天気の変わり方は、こちらでもとても急です。セツは風邪を引きましたし、わたしは少し咳が出ましたが、二人とも良くなりました。天気は、最初に寒く変わるときは、身に応えますね。晴れて、涼しくなるときは、それほど感じないものですが。
　あれから嘉納氏と話すいい機会が二度ありました。しかしあなたが待つようにとおっしゃったので、例の件については、話はしませんでした。話してもいいとおっしゃるときはいつでも話します。嘉納氏は、今は仕事の慌あわただしさが終わって、時間がたくさんあります。
　今日は、藤崎神社（八幡宮）のお祭りで、それは五日間続きます。珍しい競馬があります。－馬は、誰も乗せないで走ります。学校は、十五日に鹿児島へ遠足に行く予定です。それは十日かかるでしょう。わたしは行きません、隠岐のことをかくのに忙しいものですから。
　おからだを充分ご大事になさってください、そして具合がいいという気がするまでは、手紙を書かないでください。わたしは、この冬は穏やかな冬になると思っています－少なくとも日本では。
