Dear Nishida:-

When you write again, please let me know if it is the fruit or the flower of the Bushiu-kan that looks like (Buddha's) fingers,—or is it the leafy case outside of the fruit. Chamberlain thinks it is the fruit itself; and I wrote that it was the flower. I suspect we are both wrong.
—The new Director comes today or tomorrow (by announcement). I'll write you all the news when I have seen him.

親愛なる西田－

またお手紙を書いてくださるときに、ブッシュ-カン［仏手柑］が、（仏陀ぶっだ）の指のように見えるのは、その果実のためか、花のためか、あるいは果実の葉状の外殻がいかくのためか教えてください。チェンバレンは、実自体だと思っています。そしてわたしは、花だと書きました。わたしは両方とも間違っているのではないかと疑っているのです。
新任の校長は、今日か、明日には着任します（告示によれば）。校長に会ったら、一部始終をお知らせします。
