Dear Nishida:-

The examinations are heavy upon us,—doubtless heavy upon you also: so I write only a fewlines.
I don't see why you can't “take in” some part of Kyūshū this summer. I have applied for a general Kyūshū passport: it would be so nice to make trip with you! Then, Mr. Ushi-oda tells me that Governor Koteda will probably visit his family in Hizen. Wouldn't it be nice if we could both visit him?
—I suppose you know that Kimura didn't suit the folks in Omura, his new position. They did not like his ways; and the students disliked him very much. So he is gone to Tōkyō. I don't think his prospects are very good with his unfortunately overbearing way. It is strange that he can't help it.
—What may surprise you after all my complaints about Kyūshū is that I have actually begun to make friends here. But it took a long time. I believe I was regarded rather suspiciously for a considerable time. With the change also I find some of my views changing. But I have learned that the longer one lives in Japan, the less a foreigner knows about the people; and that the differences of race are developed wonderfully by education. In other words, instead of bringing us closer together, the higher education separates us more. The study of the causes of these differences in race-character is most interesting: I am trying to analyze a few, but the subject is so great, and so enormously complex, that it will take years to do it well. Some day, I hope we'll be able to have a chat about these things, and somewhere see the Golden Dragon on the waters.

－木村［牧］は、新しい職で大村の人たちの気に入らなかったことをあなたは知っているだろうと思います。大村の人たちは、木村のやり方を好まなかったのです。しかも生徒たちが、木村をとても嫌っていたのです。それで、東京へ行ってしまいました。あのあいにくの高圧的なやり方では、その将来の見通しは、あまりよくないと思います。それがどうにもならないとは不思議です。
－九州についてこれまであらゆる不平を言ってきた挙句の果てに、あなたをびっくりさせるかもしれませんが、わたしはこちらで本当に友だちを作り始めています。でもそれには長い時間がかかりました。わたしは、かなりの間疑いの念をもってみられていたと思います。周りの状況の変化に応じて、わたしの見方もすこし変わってきています。しかし、外国人は、日本に長く住めば住むほど、ますます日本人が分からなくなるということ、また民族の違いは、教育によって驚くほど広がっていくことを知りました。言い換えれば、高等教育は、われわれをより近づけるのではなく一層隔てていくのです。民族の特質のこのような違いの原因の研究には、この上ない関心を抱いています。わたしは少し分析をしようと努めてはいますが、この問題は非常に重要で、また途方もなく複雑ですから、立派に分析するには数年はかかるでしょう。いつかわれわれがこういうことについて話ができて、そしてどこかで海上を走る金龍丸を眺めることができるといいなあと思っています。
