Dear Nishida:- I have been worried by some work piled upon me, and could not answer your kindest letter at once. It delighted me to learn that my letter to Ochiai had done more good than harm: I rather like that boy, and I should feel very sorry to think he could be at variance with his comrades, because of some bigot's mischief-making. These preachers are representatives of the very lowest class of bigotry abroad: they are not true Christians at all. The same class of men have said that I am in their way,—that I have injured their “cause”,—and that I am a thoroughly corrupt and wicked man. They dare not say so very publicly; but my friends write me from Tōkyō that they are enraged at not being able to get into the Kyūshū school, and do all they can privately to blacken my character.
Which will not hurt me at all.
—A friend of mine, Mr. W. B. Mason (Prof. Chamberlain's fellow-worker), has got into the Dai-Ichi. If you go to Tōkyō next summer I would like you to meet him. He has a Japanese family, and two fine boys—the eldest does not look like the mother at all, but the youngest does. Mason was 17 years in the Department of Posts and Telegraphs.
—Many thanks for suggestion about the Etajima School. I may try for it,—if it is to be had at a good time. The teacher's name, I think, is Norman. He had been an English soldier. I heard that his manner is rather rough. Perhaps that is why he is not liked.
—Curious! Today the Shihan-Gakkō of Hōrai(?)ーof Riukiu,—of Okinawa Ken paid us a visit; and were formally received by all the teachers and students. The Director is a Japanese; and the young men speak perfect Japanese. Except that they have darker skins than the Kyūshū boys, they look exactly like Japanese. They wore, when I saw them, white cotton trousers, white caps, and close-fitting blue jackets, reaching only to the waist. They stay in Kumamoto two days, and then go to Dazaifu and Hakata and thence to some port whence they will go to Nagasaki to wait for the Southern steamer.
—I sent you a horribly bad copy of Taine; I could not get a better one at the time. I thought you might like to see it, as some of our students use it. The other little book is just an illustration of the interest Buddhism has excited abroad. Books arranged upon this plan are often called “Birth-day Books.” You open the book at the place of the date you want,—say Sept. 29th —and read the verse or sentence placed under that number.
—I gave your kind message to Mr. Fukui, our new teacher. He was teaching before in the Kyūshū Gakuin. He remembered you kindly.
Among all the teachers that have come during the last two years, I like best the gentleman from Niigata that I told you about. I have not become very familiar with him; but his whole manner and expression are as kind and manly and nice as can be. He is an extremely powerful man physically,—a great athlete, but very quiet in his way.
—The new classes always give me a little trouble before they fall into the proper routine. My work has been extended to the very youngest this year. I teach them nothing but coversation.
ーI hope you will keep well and strong. The weather here is still quite warm. We are all well, and all send their best wishes and regards.

このところずっと山積していた仕事に悩まされて、あなたの誠に親切なお手紙に返事を書くことができませんでした。落合［貞三郎］へのわたしの手紙が、彼を傷つけたのではなく、役に立ったと分かって嬉しく思いました。わたしはあの生徒が好きですから、誰か自分の宗教しか認めない偽善者がまいた種で、落合が友だちと仲たがいをすることもあるだろうと思うと、大変残念な気がします。こういう説教師たちは、海外でもっとも低級な部類の不寛容な偏見の典型なのです。あんな連中は、全然本物のキリスト教徒などではありません。彼らと同じ部類の人たちは、わたしがあの連中の邪魔をしているとか、－彼らの「信条」を害したとか、－また、わたしがとことん堕落した邪悪な人間だなどと言っています。あんな連中には、はっきりと、公然とそのように言う勇気はありませんが、九州の学校に入れなかったことを非常に怒って、わたしに人格を汚すために、できる限りのことをひそかに行っていると、何人かの友だちが、東京から手紙で知らせてきています。でもそんなことで、わたしは傷つくことはまったくないでしょう。
－わたしの友人、W.B.メーソン氏（チェンバレン教授の仕事仲間）は、第一［高等学校］に入りました。来年の夏東京へいらっしゃれば、会って頂きたいものです。メーソンには日本人の家族があり、素敵な男の子が二人います。長男は、奥さんには全然似ていませんが、次男が似ています。逓信ていしん省に十七年勤めていました。
－江田島の学校について示唆に富むお話をいただき誠にありがとうございます。わたしは、そこにいけるようやってみるかもしれませんし－もしも適切な時期に職に就けるならばのことですが。当の教師の名前はノーマンだと思います。この人は、それまではイギリスの軍人でした。態度はややぞんざいだということでした。多分そのためにこの人は人にすかれないのでしょう。
－何と珍しや！　今日、琉球の－沖縄県の－蓬莱ほうらい（？）の師範学校が、われわれの学校を訪ねて来ました。そして全校あげての教師と生徒によるあらたまった歓迎を受けました。校長は日本人で、若者たちは完全な日本語を話します。九州の少年たちより肌の色が黒いのを除けば、まったく日本人のように見えます。身に着けていたのは、わたしが会ったときには、白木綿もめんのズボンに白い帽子、それに腰までしかないぴったり合った青い上着でした。この若者たちは、熊本に二日滞在して大宰府だざいふと博多に行き、そしてそこからどこかの港へ行き、そこから南に向かう汽船を待つために長崎へ行きます。
－わたしはあなたにテーヌのひどく体裁の悪い本を送りましたが、現時点では、それより良いのを手に入れることができませんでした。こちらの学生のなかには、その本を使っている者もいますので、ひょっとしたら、あなたがそれを見たいと思われるだろうと思ったからです。もう一冊の小さな本は、まさしく仏教が海外で呼び起こした関心を如実にょじつに示している一冊です。今回の企画で編集された本は、しばしば「誕生日の本」と呼ばれています。自分が見たいと思う日にちのところを開くのです。例えば、九月二十九日を開き、その日付のところに入っている詩とか文章を読むのです。
－あなたの親切な伝言は、新任の福井氏に伝えました。以前、同氏は九州学院で教えていました。あなたによろしくとのことでした。
この二年間に着任した全教員の中で、わたしは、あなたに話した新潟から来た人が一番好きです。その人とは、まだそれほど親しくなってはいませんが、その態度と表情は、この上なく思いやりがあり、男らしく、立派です。からだは非常に頑強な人ですぐれたスポーツマンですが、態度は、非常に温厚な方です。
－新しいクラスは、きちんと決まった形の授業ができるようになるまでは、いつもちょっと苦労します。今年は、わたしの務めは、一番若い学生たちにまで広がりました。会話だけを教えます。
