Dear Nishida:-
You will be glad to hear that my new book, “Out of the East”, is now in the printer's hands, and will probably reach Japan in the Spring. It will contain some references to Izumo. —Of “Glimpses”, 1,800 copies have already been sold. I think I am going to have some success.
—Settsu begs pardon for not having written you sooner. She will write very soon. The little boy had a cold;—and what with anxiety about him and visits to the doctor, Settsu has not been able to write. The boy is all right again now—and very troublesome. Wants the moon and other impossible things.
—I have been asked to write a book on “living Buddhism”—Buddhism as a faith regulating human conduct, not as a philosophy. This I find to be very difficult. In order to get the material for such a book, I should have to get some nice old priest to write under instructions, and I should want to know the history of a child's religious teaching—questions and answers. I would gladly pay for the material any reasonable price within my power. If you can suggest anything possible in relation to such an undertaking within the next six months, I should be very glad. I fancy, however, that the work would have to be done in Japanese,—for those who speak English neither care nor know much about such matters, as a rule; and the very few who do study only the philosophy of Buddhism. I'm going to draw up a plan of the work, and will send you a sketch some day, if you think it of any use. The (printed) book would be small; but it would require about two years to write.

わたしの新しい本『東の国から』が今植字工の手に渡っていて、多分春には日本に到着するだろうと聞いたら喜んでくださるでしょう。その本には、いくつか出雲に触れた記述が入っています。－『面影』は既に一、八〇〇部売れました。わたしはかなり成功を収めるだろうと思います。
－セツは、あなたにもっと早く便りを差し上げなかったことをお詫びしています。すぐに便りを差し上げるでしょう。かわいい息子は風邪を引きました。－それで息子の心配や、医者に行ったりして、セツは便りを差し上げることができませんでした。息子は、今はまた元気になっています－そして大変厄介です。お月さんだとか、その他手に入れることができないものをねだったりしています。
－わたしは、「現代の仏教」に関する本を書く依頼を受けています－人間の行為を律している信仰としての仏教で、哲学としての仏教ではありません。これは、わたしは大変難しいと分かっています。そのような本を書くための資料を手に入れるためには、誰かある立派な老僧を求めて、いろいろと教えて頂いて書かなければならないでしょう。そしてわたしは、子どもの宗教教育－質問と応答－の歴史を知りたいものです。わたしはその資料に対しては、自分の力の及ぶ限り適当な金額を喜んで払うつもりです。もしもあなたがそのような企てに関して、向う六ヶ月以内に、何か示唆を与えて下さることができれば、大変嬉しく思います。しかしその仕事は、日本語でしなければならないことではないでしょうか－というのは、英語を話す人たちは、大抵はそのような事柄にはあまり関心もなければ、またそれほど知りもしないのです。また極めて少数ながら関心を持っている人たちは、仏教哲学だけを研究しているものです。わたしはこの仕事の計画を立てて、もしもあなたにとって何らかのお役に立つとお考えなら、いつかその概略スケッチをお送りいたしましょう。その（印刷された）本はささやかなものでしょうが、書くのには二年ばかりかかるでしょう。
