Dear Hearn

　Had I [illegible] I would [have] answered you immediately when your letter was [received]. But though I could not write you I did not lack time to do what I can for you about the registration of your son. Mr. [Takaki] came often and told I told him how to manage the matter as I was taught by the mayor Takahashi. It will soon be finished. Don’t care about it at all. Again your son’s registration has no connection with your own. Indeed it is not prudent to complicate the complication.

[illegible] by necessary to finish [illegible] management for making you a Japanese citizen, and after you become Mr. Koizumi you may easily have your son transfered (sic.) to your family and then acknowledged as your legal son. So that you shall urge to your agent at Tokyo to send the necessary documents (for your naturalisation). I can not believe that your case is rare and peculiar as he says, for here is a Japanese family consisting of a lady and an English gentleman wishes to be her husband (iri-muko)̶the most simple and common course now taken by any foreigner wishing to become a Japanese.
