Dear Hearn

　Many thanks for your another gift of the new interesting book about Japan. Do you know the author? Was he staying long in Japan? Though it seemed rather to want the originality of the observations in some part that I selected to read over first we are glad that the Japanese have another friend among the foreigners who estimates our civilization not [solely] from the occidental standard or from a material point of view.
　Some days ago the Governor’s private secretary brought me an English letter to translate for him. It was the letter from the British acting-consul at Kobe informing that you are not impeded by English law from becoming a Japanese subject. It will not be long, I think, before you will be “Koizumi-san.”
　I am glad, both for your dear ones and for myself, that your health is good and you have not to leave Japan, engaging in your literary work here.

親愛なるハーン－

　あなたのもう一つの贈り物、日本に関する興味深い新著を本当にありがとうございます。あなたは、その著書と知り合いですか。日本に長らく滞在していましたか。最初に私が読もうとして選んだある部分で、観察に基づく意見が、やや独創性に欠けているように思えますが、われわれは、単に西洋的基準や、物質的観点からではなく、われわれの文化を評価している外国人の中に、もう一人の友人を持つことを嬉しく思っています。
数日前、知事の私的秘書が英語の手紙を持ってきて、知事のために翻訳して頂きたいと言ってきました。それは、神戸の臨時代理総領事からのもので、イギリスの法律は、あなたが日本国民になることを妨げないということを伝えたものでした。あなたが、「小泉さん」になるのは、長くはかからないだろうと思います。
　あなたの健康がすぐれていて、日本を去る必要がなく、日本で文学の仕事を従事されるのは、あなたの愛する方々とわたし自身の双方(そうほう)にとって、嬉しいことです。
